Specialist in Oral Medicine and Periodontics
I grew up in the Overberg, South Africa and spent my childhood years in the small towns of Klipdale and Bredasdorp.
Due to an accident involving me, a tree and gravity, I spent many hours in the dentist’s chair as a child and from there the idea to follow this career path. I graduated as a dentist from the University of Stellenbosch in 1996 to be awarded the first prizes in both Oral Medicine & Periodontology as well as Crown & Bridgework, in my final year.
After graduation, my wife and I moved to the United Kingdom where we practiced dentistry for eight years. Whilst enjoying all aspects of general dentistry, I had a particular interest in Periodontics, the treatment of problems relating to gums and gum disease. In May 2000 I passed the examination for Membership of the Faculty of General Dental Practitioners at the Royal College of Surgeons RCS (UK). Following this achievement, we moved to Newcastle upon Thyne in the North-East of England where I joined the Newcastle University as a Senior House Officer for one year. This post-graduate rotation through all dental departments of a world-renowned Dental Training Hospital gave me a wonderful insight into the different aspects of dentistry, allowing me to provide a very high standard of dentistry to all my patients. In October 2001 I passed the examination for Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, MFDS (RCS).
After our boys were born, we were set on returning to South Africa. I was accepted for the MChD in Oral Medicine and Periodontics at the University of Stellenbosch in 2004. I graduated in 2008 from the University of Western Cape (the Faculties of Dentistry of the Universities of Stellenbosch and UWC merged during the course of my post-graduate studies).
I worked as a Specialist in my field at Intercare Tyger Valley and at Hout Bay Dental Studio. I started my own practice in Somerset West in 2009 and we moved out here in 2010.
In recognition of my commitment to the discipline of Oral Medicine and Periodontics, I have been a member of the South African Society of Periodontology (SASPIO) from 2010. I served on the Executive committee (EXCO) of SASPIO from 2010 untill 2022. During that period I served as President of SASPIO from 2012-2014 and also in the positions of Past President and Treasurer of the society for 4 years. I also received a Medal for my contributions to SASPIO at the last AGM held in 2022. I am a Fellow of the International Team for Implantology (ITI), the largest Dental Implant Society Globally, and in 2022 I was elected as President of the ITI Southern Africa Section.
I have been a Consultant in the Department of Oral Medicine and Periodontics of the University of the Western Cape Dental Faculty since 2019, teaching the Registrars in Oral Medicine, Implantology and Periodontics.
I enjoy all aspects of my dental speciality, but get true satisfaction from particularly challenging cases, involving advanced implant placement and the re-creation of soft tissue harmony and building of new bone to make these implants possible. I also have a specific interest in the augmentation and shaping of soft tissue for aesthetic purposes.
I thrive on the interactions of working together with referring colleagues, providing specialist care for their patients.
